Director Deepa Mehta and actor Seema Biswas have one thing in common. They both badly need to loosen up. Seema has been doing un unbroken series of stern wretchedly unhappy characters including the unforgiving mother in Sooraj Barjatya's Vivah and the profoundly grieving widow in Deepa Mehta's Water. Deepa has been going through her own bouts of depression after shooting the story of a battered wife in Heaven On Earth. Both Biswas and Mehta are ready to whoop it up with a comedy. "It is a film called Stella - it’s about a joyous adventure of a wacky nanny. I just thought Seema was so right for it. So far we've only seen her in serious roles. Sorry for the radio silence here, folks. I had a house full of relatives for the past week, and there hasn't been much Shabana news on the wires, so it got a little quiet here at SLP. The November poll - Shabana films from an alternate universe - collected a total of 24 votes, and the results were pretty interesting. A plurality of you want to see Shabana ji in more comedies. Hema Malini's role in Seeta aur Geeta won the poll with 8 votes, and Meryl Streep's role in The Devil Wears Prada picked up a healthy four. Beyond that, poor Seema Biswas takes a beating, as 7 of you wanted to see what Shabana ji could do as Phoolan Devi in Bandit Queen, and four more were pining for the original casting of Water, with Shabana ji in Seema ji's role. I was in a weird mood the day I wrote the poll, and perhaps that is why mine was the only vote for Shabana ji as Sigourney Weaver's Ripley in the Alien series. And finally, Jaya ji's role in Hazaar chaurasi ki maa didn't get any votes at all - perhaps that is because no one has seen the film - and neither did Eva Peron (were she alive she would perhaps have sought a way to rig the election in her favor). I've had a stay of execution, as it were. The reason I've been so overwhelmed with work the last couple of weeks is that I was preparing for a trial that was scheduled for the end of the month. The trial has been postponed to the spring, which means I can breathe a little easier, and it also means: you get a November poll! Last month's poll was a warm-up. This month things get really weird. Barcelona, lunes 29 de octubre del 2007 Anoche vi en DVD "Agua", de la directoria india Deepa Mehta, con Lisa Ray, John Abraham y Seema Biswas, una película del 2005, aunque la historia transcurre en 1938, cuando está surgiendo el movimiento nacionalista liderado por Mahatma Gandhi. El tema de la película son las viudas, porque, según las creencias hindúes, cuando muere el marido su mujer tiene tres opciones: o se casa con el hermano más joven del marido, o arde con él o lleva una vida de total abnegación, recluida en un ashram para viudas. Chuyia, de 8 años, es llevada al ashram, donde conoce a la hermosa Kalyani, viuda desde los 9 años. Kalyani conoce a un joven abogado seguidor de Gandhi e hijo de un brahmán, Narayan, que le propone matrimonio. Aunque hace poco se ha aprobado una ley que permite a las viudas volver a casarse, casi nadie conoce la ley, porque a los que tendrían que divulgarla no les conviene? aparte de que las viudas viven en condiciones de extrema pobreza y por ejemplo Kalyani es analfabeta.
