Resolved Question: Poll, Indian girls and women.......Your opinion on having a Bill on abolishion of 'Parya Dhan' system?
The barrage of feedbacks on the issue of 'Paraya Dhan' and the woman's status in our society (my previous ques) was heartening and thought provoking. Our government has time and again launched schemes to uplift and improve the lot of the girl child and the woman (Ref link http://www.indiastat.com/socialandwelfar? but none of them have actually taken off well. The reason?............. is very obvious. Responsibility for implementation of these schemes apply to the government or local bodies, ... and some NGOs. Not one directly applies to the girl's parents. So, the parents recklessly avail of every accessible benefit due to their girl child, and finally marry them off, with a sigh of relief of having got rid of the 'burden'!. What I strongly feel is, a parliamentary bill could be passed, abolishing the 'Paraya Dhan' system..... and, a judiciary stroke added, by making its practice, a punishable offence. Such a law would make every parent directly responsible for the welfare and safety of the girl child. The girl child would no longer live with the dread of having to go to an unknown house after being married. It would also put an end to the many atrocities committed against women, like dowry related killings, torture at the hands of the 'In laws', bride burning etc etc. Ques: Your valuable opinion and suggestions in this regard? I know and have increasingly felt that such an issue will not be taken kindly by those fortunate women, who are ensconced in the safety of a happy home, or those who have not been exposed to such an appalling treatment, whether directly or indirectly........... and also by some of the male counterparts, who would erroneously take it as a personal assault. My intention is only to call your attention to a burning problem in our society, and to appeal to your sense of empathy, to work out a plausible solution to this. This would mean, the Govt can sit back and work on more creative ventures, than churn out reams and reams of projects on women empowerment!!... cuz, she would be automatically empowered as her male sibs, AT HOME!
