Long before more notorious Bollywood interpretations of Superman there was Return of Mr. Superman , a no-budget feature written, produced and directed by Manmohan Sabir. Unfortunately for Sabir, there was also Superman , another take on the apparently not so-all-American-hero directed by Mohammed Hussain during the very same year, which, like Return of Mr. Superman , also featured Jairaj in the title role, in addition to Nirupa Roy. Sabir's film originally bore the same title as Hussain's, but after that film's producer, Ram Dayal--evidencing a very selective attitude toward the primacy of intellectual property rights--raised objections, Sabir changed it to the somewhat confusing moniker that it's known by today. I say "confusing" because Return of Mr. Superman is by no means a sequel, and devotes quite a lot of time to the retelling of the already oft-told tale of how the Man of Steel came to be. But before that retelling, Return opens in classic Z movie fashion, greeting the audience with a deluge of miscellaneous stock footage that lasts a full seven minutes. Much of this is comprised of "savage nature" type scenarios in which animals are shown attacking one another in the wild, and, sadly, the VCD's lack of English subtitles prevents me from relating to you just how exactly the voice-over narration ties all of that into the story that follows. AAN MILO SAJNA 1970, 169 minutes, Baba Traders (subtitled) Starring: Rajesh Khanna (Ajit), Asha Parekh (Varsha), Vinod Khanna (Anil), Nirupa Roy (Savriti), a very creepy young boy, a rabbit-faced woman, and a goofy comedian dressed up like a cow. Music by: Laxmikant-Pyarelal Direction by: Mukul Dutt "Aan Milo Sajna" is a movie about weird people, most of whom are either funny or frightening depending on your disposition. I've been doing a lot of soul-searching lately trying to figure out if I'd find Varsha (Asha Parekh's character) charming if I met her, or if I'd just want to deck her. The thing about Varsha is if you DID plan on decking her, she'd probably deck you first, and that's one reason everybody in the film loves her so darn much. She plays Varsha, a bright-eyed, quirky, mischievous caricature who has found herself participating in a dangerous lie: she's pretending to be the fiancî`f a rich hedonistic playboy named Anil. It seems Anil has spent his entire life betting (and losing) his mother's money at the racetrack (or, when he gets tired of horses, just losing it all by playing a strange type of poker that only involves 3 cards). In between his cheerful "losing money" sprees he also finds time to sleep with a lot of very sleazy girls and make cutting comments about how little he cares for others (including God). This alone would make for an intriguing film -- we might even get a chance to learn how to play Three Card Poker ...

A video that found its way into my inbox is one in which certain lady students of a prestigious Indian management institute are captured on film,walking down the street shouting obscenities at a rival college during an inter-college fest. Some people are shocked at the language coming out of the mouths of students of one of the nation?s premier centers of learning. Some people, who are not so naive as the first group, are still dismayed that some of the corporate leaders of tomorrow, pursuing an advanced degree, would so ?give in to the moment? fully cognizant of the fact that they were being recorded and that there exists the very real possibility that one of the persons watching this video may be a current or prospective employer/professor who may take a dim view of what he/she just saw? For most people however it is the fact that humanoids who remind us of our ma-behen are speculating about the anatomies of other people?s ma behen that is the most disturbing?-what has the country come to? What would Nirupa Roy have done? Subject to the most terrible of depredations would she have said ?Seth Dharmdas, tune ek widhawa ko beghar kar diya, uske beton ko bheekh maagne ke liye majboor kia?..teri maan ki?.?? Possibly not. While I personally admire the girls? college spirit, what disturbs me is the unimaginative nature of the expletives. Surely the best minds of the nation, who shall master the art of boardroom machinations, can do better ...

Rating : 5/10 Running Time : 150 Minutes Release Date : 1st August ?08 Director : Sachin Khot ; Writer : Anil Pandey ; Music : Anu Malik Starring : Ranvir Shorey, Mallika Sherawat, Sushmita Mukherjee I?m trying to think what I found most interesting in the film. The characterization of Mallika Sherawat as an aggressive, slap-happy female, her hilarious film scripts, Ranvir Sheorey?s passive ?slave? characterization, his T-shirts which always seemed to foretell whats going to happen to him or the short-lived character named Debu. All these kind of make up for the predictability and actual implausibility of the whole film, some clichéd & slapstick jokes and the unnecessary melodrama at the end (though the last couple of scenes were actually well handled). I think Mallika?s actually quite a talented actress who?s acting ability gets overshadowed by her other, more obvious and visible assets. She did a very good job in Pyaar ke Side Effects and continued to impress in this one as a very tom-boyish character, who is hilariously described by Ranvir in the film as a cross between Keshto Mukherjee and Medha Patkar. Add to that shades of Nirupa Roy / Nutan as a weepy waif and you have a more complete picture. Basically, she?s a girl who loves her drink (a little too much), is a strong minded but kinky character, comes up with impossible challenges, who is not hesitant to use muscle vs brain and who prefers ?yes men? around her vs men with a mind ...

It?s been some time since I?ve blogged, and there?s good reason behind that .With my work load reaching an all time high akin to the stock market in recent times,I had little time to focus. The past two months or so had also been well invested in tackling the next sequel of Mission Impossible, and at the end of it all, the result has been pleasant. After years of toil and effort that were targeted to achieve a single goal,I finally find myself knocking at the doorstep of my milestone ? the Indian Institute of Management. India, a land of superfluous population has a billion people aspiring for a common pool of resources, that are as few in number as the rain drops in the Sahara Desert. And one of these resources is the coveted IIM that appeals to the aspirations of many,like you and me. My aunt made a good statement the other day. She said, ?People are best at telling others what to do, what they themselves actually are poor at?. It did make me think. The BCCI selectors, the politicians of India, bosses in general - the list is endless. Off late, even as ? kya aap paanchvi paas se tez hai ? had me stumped on many questions, I began to wonder if my IQ had indeed been erased like Nirupa Roy?s eyesight in the movie ? Amar, Akbar, Anthony ?. But some solace arrived with the news that the watchman at the IIM gate finally decided to let me in, having found me waiting for long.
