While many people know Naomi Campbell, Tyra Banks, Iman and Beverly Johnson- It was Donyale Luna set the trend for Black Woman in High Fashion. Born: Peggy Anne Freeman in Detroit, Michigan on January 1st. 1945. Donyale Luna was the first notable African American supermodel and the first black cover girl. After being discovered by the photographer David McCabe, she moved from Detroit to New York City to pursue a modeling career. She appeared on the cover of Harper's Bazaar in January 1965 while under an exclusive contract to the photographer Richard Avedon. She became the first African American model to appear on the cover of Vogue (March 1966). Photographed by David Bailey, the cover is infamous for how the photographer made her hide her features with her hand as to not 'offend' Vogue's regular, white readers. An article in Time magazine published on 1 April 1966, "The Luna Year", described the dramatically thin , 6 foot 2 model as "a new heavenly body in the world of Fashion". Donyale Luna, was unquestionably the hottest model in Europe. She is only 20, hails from Detroit, and is not to be missed." In 1967, the mannequin manufacturer Adel Rootstein created a mannequin in Luna's image, a follow-up to her famous Twiggy mannequin of 1966. Unprofessional behavior such as not showing up for bookings signaled the decline of Luna's career. As recalled by Beverly Johnson who came to prominence toward the end of Luna's heyday. Beverly Johnson has been reported to say that Donyale Luna didn't have a hard time, she made it hard for herself." During the late 1960s and early 1970s, Luna appeared in several films produced by Andy Warhol (including Camp) and Federico Fellini (Fellini Satyricon). She also appeared in The Rolling Stones Rock and Roll Circus, The Otto Preminger comedy Skidoo (in which she was featured as the mistress of God, who was portrayed by Groucho Marx), She also was in the British documentary "Tonite Let's All Make Love in London". Salvador Dalí considered her one of his favorite models. Donyale Luna was married briefly in the mid 1960s, to a man some described as a gigolo. Later she was engaged to the Austrian actor Maximilian Schell, and to Georg Willing, a German actor. In the late 1960s, in an interview, Donyale expressed her fondness for the drug LSD: She said ...."I think it's great. I learned that I like to live, I like to make love, I really do love somebody, I love flowers, I love the sky, I like bright colors, I like animals. LSD also showed me unhappy things -- that I was stubborn, selfish, unreasonable, mean, that I hurt other people and most of all myself." Luna died in Rome, Italy, of a drug overdose. Donyale had a daughter named Dream Cazzaniga with Italian photographer Luigi Cazzaniga, who photographed Donyale for Playboy in 1975. Today, Dream is a successful dancer, actress and singer in Italy. She's working with great artists all over the world, traveling for their live tours as a dancer: Geri Halliwell, Ricky Martin, Kylie Minougue, Lionel Ritchie and more.

Teaming up for a good cause, Rihanna and Jay-Z were among the performers on hand in Abuja to kick off the Thisday Music and Fashion Festival on Friday night (July 11). Meanwhile, Naomi Campbell, who was on hand as an ambassador of the United Nations on Climate Change, blasted "the widely held notion in Europe and the States about Africa being a land of poverty, where famine and epidemics ravage the continent." "The theme of the Thisday Festival is Africa Rising which would tell the world that Africa is a continent of plenty. The notion is always that it is a continent of poverty, admittedly there are some places like that but it is a rich continent," the supermodel told.
