Helpers assist the Bascos in moving out of the Karuna Arts Yoga location Friday, Feb. 3. Photo by Scott Schaefer. Karuna Arts Yoga has occupied the building on the corner of Ambaum Blvd. and SW 152nd in Olde Burien for 7 years and Anne Basco the owner has successfully taught a wide range of students from the novice to advanced. She has also conducted in-depth programs that have produced many new teachers who now teach at the studio and who have carried the skills taught by Anne to studios around the area and beyond. Johnny Basco opened The Tag Zone 2 years ago and has built a thriving business that has attracted children and their parents to Old Burien. The studio is now moving to a new location in Des Moines, on the corner of 6th Ave SW and S. 223rd (605 South 223rd Street). The building has been extensively remodeled, turning it from a boat showroom into a 1st class yoga facility with 2 studios and reception area, bathrooms and changing rooms. The Tag Zone is in the same building but in its own separate and private space. This weekend Feb 4-5th, the Bascos are hosting an Open House, with tours of The Tag Zone as well as free yoga classes. Saturday at Noon the Mayor of Des Moines will be cutting a ribbon to celebrate the opening of two new businesses in Des Moines. Definitely a celebration in these lean times. Government Deputy Minister Vinayagamurthi Muralitharan (Karuna Amman) says the government has a right to acquire land for national security reasons. He said that land in the north and east will be acquired on this basis to build permanent army camps and civilians who had their homes in those areas will be relocated and with be provided all the basic facilities. ?We will give them livelihood assistance and build a health center and everything else they need. So their lifestyle will not be affected,? Minister Muralitharan told reporters today. He said Pudumathalan in the north will have a permanent army camp and people will not be resettled in that area. He recalled that when these areas were under LTTE control the LTTE forcefully acquired land without giving the people alternate places to re-settle. However he said the government will not only give alternate land but also give the people a choice on where they wish to be relocated. The Minister also said that land in Sampur is going to be acquired for a coal power project and the families on that land will be relocated. He said that the project will be beneficial for the people living in the Eastern province. ...
We?re always happy to talk about the work of Karuna-Shechen here; the organization, which focuses on humanitarian work in the Himalayan region, is truly an inspiration. And it turns out, it had a great 2011. By which we mean that its work ? 120 projects by the count of main coordinator Matthieu Ricard (pictured, center, above) ? flourished, assisting many people in need. Here?s Ricard?s latest ?annual report,? as it were; see if you?re not inspired. Writes Ricard: Dear Friends of Karuna-Shechen, The year 2011 has been fruitful and constructive for Karuna-Shechen and we have begun a few new ventures in our target countries. In East Tibet, we are continuing our commitment to assist local people with their projects and needs. We are supporting the construction of two new large schools and a surgical clinic. We are helping with elementary schools and continuing our work with small medical clinics and social services. This includes support to the elderly, disabled, and destitute. In Nepal, the Shechen Clinic has a new director, an experienced and dedicated Nepalese woman, Aruna Rayamajhi, who we hope will further lead the clinic towards fulfilling its mission of caring for the most needy. We have built two new Bamboo Schools (in Ilam and Jhapa) and the first Bamboo College.
