We think the ELLE.com staff is gearing up for worldwide (web) dominance, because they've swiped yet another magazine staffer for their team. This time, it's Alexandra Gershman, the Nylon designer who'll start work on ELLE's website - with special attention to ELLEGirl, our former favorite magazine - in a few weeks. The move comes as ELLEGirl separates itself from Alloy, the teen marketing megaship that's also responsible for those crazy Traveling Pants, the Gossip Girl series, and (in part) that little plagiarism scandal where Harvard freshman Kaavya Viswanathan "wrote" a book that was actually someone else's. I haven't read Jon Keller's new book, The Bluest State, but apparently it is being criticized for improperly citing (in other words not citing) material that came from various sources. I'm willing to bet that the criticism is a bit overblown... but this is something Keller and his publisher should have anticipated. In the writing of my book, Caucus of Corruption , my coauthor Mark Noonan and I went to extraordinary efforts to adequately cite sources used in the research and writing of it. It's heavily footnoted. Why? Because when you write a book about politics you can never be too careful. People who disagree with you will go to extraordinary lengths to try to discredit you. Bloggers who don't appropriately link/quote/cite material have been targets of criticism, and who can forget the Kaavya Viswanathan debacle ? Remember, footnotes and endnotes are your friends. ...

The debut novel by a Harvard sophomore that faces allegations of plagiarism has been permanently withdrawn and her two-book deal cancelled. Publisher Little, Brown and Company announced cancellation of the deal for Kaavya Viswanathan's How Opal Mehta Got Kissed, Got Wild and Got a Life, and a promised second novel, Tuesday. The book was pulled from stores last week after Viswanathan apologized for unintentional similarities to the work of author Megan McCafferty. Little, Brown promised at that time that a revised version would be published. However, the book was further tarnished this week by allegations it contained additional passages that mimic work by other authors. "Little, Brown and Company will not be publishing a revised edition of How Opal Mehta Got Kissed, Got Wild, and Got a Life by Kaavya Viswanathan, nor will we publish the second book under contract," Michael Pietsch, Little Brown's senior vice-president and publisher, said in a statement. for more on the story : check www.thecrimson.com or www.harvardindependent.com ...

Artists of various spheres seems to be facing a shortage of creativity...for, creativity in one?s own rights alone sets the person apart from the crowd, even makes one stand out of the same fraternity...writers, fashion designers, architects all included. Fashion designers lifting designs from others have been quite common now more so in India. The accuses are the same all the time...that one has copied someone else?s imaginative work blatantly. As for writing, it isn?t new either. Recently, Dan Brown caught a lot of attention on that aspect...and now it is Kaavya Viswanathan. Couple of years ago, I remember buying a lot of Interior Designing books to my sister who herself was a budding designer then, with an intention to help her. But she refused them outright, saying that if she reads them, she would tend to think on the lines of what she sees and that her own creativity would go for a toss if she goes over them! I wasn?t convinced...as a wannabe writer myself, I read a lot of books ? one has to read a lot in order to write...that?s my point and in my sister?s case, the same holds true. One has to know how things are done in the world, at the same time not borrow the existing ideas but use it to fuel their own imagination and come up with something fresh. Jane's post about the alleged Lanaia Lee plagiarism of David Gemmell's work, along with the follow up post on libel and defamation got me thinking about last year's plagiarism accusation: Kaavya Viswanathan. Not too long ago, I saw that my library still has copies of her book circulating. When I asked at the reference desk, the librarian on duty checked with a couple of other librarians, then said that he didn't know what the library's policy was in that situation or even if they had one. So I checked into the Ask Us Now chat helpline today -- no answer there, although they've referred my question to the administrative office. I'm really interested in knowing if there is any policy at all. ...
