Nestled in between lofty high Himalayan peaks, Manali, at altitude of 1,950 m (6,400 ft), in the Beas River valley is an important hill station in the mountains of Himachal Pradesh, India.

Manali is named after the Hindu lawgiver - the great sage 'Manu'. The word Manali is regarded as the changed name of "Manu-Alaya" which literally means "the abode of Manu".

Legend has it that sage Manu stepped off his ark in Manali to recreate human life after a great flood had deluged the world. A story in Indian mythology that reminds one of Noah's Ark.
Manali is also often referred to as the "Valley of the Gods". The Old Manali village has an ancient temple dedicated to sage Manu.

In ancient times, the valley was sparsely populated by nomadic hunters known as 'rakshas'. The next arrivals were the shepherds who arrived from the Kangra Valley and settled to take up agriculture.

The British introduced apple trees and trout, which were not native to Manali flora and fauna. It is said that when apple trees were first planted the fruits were so plentiful that often branches, unable to bear the weight, would collapse. To this day, apple?along with plum and pear?remains the best source of income for the majority of its inhabitants.

The small town was the beginning of an ancient trade route to Ladakh and from there over the Karakoram Pass on to Yarkand and Khotan in the Tarim Basin.

Manali and the surrounding area is of great significance to Indian culture and heritage as it is said to be the home of the 'Saptarshi' or Seven Sages.

Long overdue, putting together this collection I call "Circling the High Passes"

The name i've given to the wildest, most fantastic road trip that the Himalayas has to offer - a road trip around Ladakh. Entering these high lands from Manali at the south and exiting westwards through Kashmir, i have divided this trip into 7 phases, as follows:

Phase 1: Into the Lands of the Gods
- the entry into the Himalayas.

Phase 2: Enter the Golden Lands
- on the famous Manali - Leh highway, our journey into Ladakh, crossing over some of the world's highest passes

Phase 3: Getting Leh'd
- around Leh town - experience its unique laid back feel and some of the famous monasteries around

Phase 4: To the Other Side
- crossing over the world's highest motorable pass - Khardung La and into the Nubra Valley

Phase 5: Heading for the Blue
- the ride to Pangong Lake, like a deep blue treasure in the midst of barren golden mountains

Phase 6: Moonscaping
- to the west of Ladakh, all the way to the famous Lamayuru Monastery

Phase 7: Kashmiri - By Nature
- the last part of the journey from Ladakh to Kashmir...a complete turnaround in the nature of the landscapes and the nature of people - the traditions and cultures.

21 days, 3 days to every phase, 7 pictures to every day, 21 pictures for each of these 7 chapters...147 images in total...some images that were previously not so well processed...most that have not yet been processed...hope you enjoy the show!
