I read poppin's post on the India-U.S divide today and it set me thinking. I wonder whether we carry anything because we are Indians. People have commented, if an Indian lives in America then he or she is first an American and then only an Indian. To be frank, how many of us are really patriotic to the country of which, we are Citizens. What do we do for our respective countries? What is the value of Independence day for us. We are 5 generations away from when we were slaves so we really don't know how it is to be a slave to peoperly appreciate freedom. So, atleast for me August 15th is another holiday and I either laze around with Abi or finish any pending chores as I would do on any other Sunday. Oh yes, reading about Bharathiyar, Siva, Gandhi and other Indian freedom fighters does bring goose bumps but reading about Abraham Lincoln or even watching Devayani suffering at the hands of Adithya in the famous tamil tele-serial Kolangal also causes the same feeling. So I don't think those feelings are because I am an Indian but because I am human and I can empathise with their sufferings. I really don't know what this C-word means. Really. But one thing I know is I am born in a Brahmin family and we speak Tamil and I or we live a certain way and celebrate certain things. The greatest English film I ever watched and keep watching is ? Coppola's The Godfather ? (1972). It?s like reading Mahabharat . I have been watching my father ever since the Twenty/20 cricket World Cup started till it ended with the Indians winning the final this week. Every time he and his friends would sit down in front of the telly, analyse the teams and the prospects of winning and losing for each team, how the players would fare, weather conditions, berate the umpire if they gave decisions that were though to be 'foolhardy.' It was quite a sight. Every evening, since the tournament started till it got over, my dad would be seated on the floor with his face glued to our 21 inch tv screen. For him cricket was the new serial. No more BS from the house of Radaan (Radhika Sarathkumar's production house, if y'all follow Tamil serials) or unbearable melodrama from Devayani (Kolangal). One of my father's friends is a roly poly Iyer mama, a travel agent who takes care of our ticket needs, out ticketmaster, be it my fathers trip to Kerala or my Patti's yearly sojourn to visit her son in Florida. Everytime there was a match involving India, I would make comments such as "All out for no loss" "The Indians are going to lose today. They will never get to the finals." Here is my own take on the Mahabharata. I have long believed that history is written by winners, and if the epic battle did actually take place, there was plenty to explain that has not been explained by sage Vyas. So for all of those who want to know the real deal this is the first story of the Mahabharat series. The Story of Yayati Shukracharaya, the guru of the asuras, was presently working at the court of Vrishaparva , the asura king, who greatly respected the guru because of his ability to bring back to life fallen asuras. Devayani was the only daughter of Shukracharaya and because of the adulation of his father, had grown into a stubborn and arrogant, albeit very beautiful, young woman. One day, the daughter of Vrishaparva, Sharmishtha, came to the guru 's ashram, along with her friends, as they were going out to the forests for a picnic. In between the picnic, the girls decided to take a bath at a lake nearby. Now as far as my understanding of Hindu mythology goes, bathing together was a very popular hobby by the Indian folks; girls with girls and girls with boys. So well, these beautiful girls decided to take a bath in the lake. Now, as soon as these women had stripped naked and gone into the lake, a violent storm blew away their clothes, and their clothes got mixed. A six-day festival of Indian films is being organised by The Madras Film Society. The festival begins from today in association with NFDC (National Film Development Corporation). The films will be screened at the Film Chamber theatre in Chennai. The festival was inaugurated by K. Rajagopal, President, South Indian Film Chamber of Commerce (SIFCC). The function was presided by Abirami S. Ramanathan. N. Ramakrishnan, Regional manager of NFDC and actress Devayani were the guests of honour. The films that will be screened are Cherans Thavamai Thavamirundhu, that won the National Award for best film on family welfare, the Hindi film Samar directed by veteran director Shyam Benegal, and the Malayalam film Thanmathra, starring Mohanlal and directed by Blessy, which deals with Alzheimers disease. Besides these films, the Bengali film Tok Jhal Misti (means Life is sour, life is sweet), a comedy directed by Basu Chatterjee and the Telugu film Pokiri, starring Mahesh Babu and Trisha will also be screened. My very dear, distinguished searcher, Though Google is being considered as the best search engine by a lot of people, I am genuinely beginning to question the authenticity of the search results being generated. Yes, I know that Google uses Page Rank Algorithm for sorting the search results.
