Dev Anand

"Guide" (1965) is an Indian movie directed by Vijay Anand, who also contributed with the screenplay. The movie is based on the critically acclaimed novel by R. K. Narayan, and is widely considered to be one of the masterpieces of the Indian film industry. The movie stars Dev Anand and Waheeda Rehman. Music by S.D. Burman. I have always loved Dev Anand for all the melodious songs in his films. Having grown up in the Doordarshan era, I have grown on all those black and white numbers, which still keep resonating in the ears. So, when his autobiography was published last year, it was definitely on my list of ?to be read? books. Like most autobiographies, this book also moves in an absolute chronological order, except in the beginning where Dev Anand remembers his life before he moves to Bombay while on a train from Gurdaspur to Bombay. He briefly talks about his family and what he felt when he left them to pursue his dreams. Throughout the book Dev Anand comes across as a constant dreamer, who lives in his dreams and then wakes up to make those dreams come true both in his life and his films. His life is all about films and the women who walked with him in his journey, specially the ones which painted the silver screen with him. At times he met them while being a part of the film and at other times, he met them and then went ahead and made films for them. From the early forties to the 21st century what has not changed is the age of the women he fancied and romanced; it was less than twenty then and continues to be the same now. In line with his image of an evergreen, timeless hero, he does not mention the years anywhere, though you can make out the rough timing by the films he mentions and the national events that he mentions here and there. The subject of today's review is Warrant . Not Warrant as in the band that sang "Cherry Pie", but Warrant as in, " Warrant you that creepy old guy who was repeatedly cast opposite starlets who were a generation younger than him throughout the Seventies?" That's right, Warrant is yet another starring vehicle for that boon to stunt doubles and toupee makers that was late period Dev Anand. And while I've already voiced my objections to this unctuous and unaccountably smug creature, my experience with the rollicking adventure yarn Kalabaaz taught me that not every movie that contains him necessarily has to suck. This emboldened me to give Warrant a try. After all, I thought, how could a movie that stars Zeenat Aman as a ruthless assassin for hire, and also features the great Dara Singh in a prominent supporting role, be bad? I then braced myself for the worst, since that question usually serves to bring perilously large chunks of suckitude hailing down upon my head like some kind of malevolently rebounding magical incantation. This time, however, I was right, for Warrant turned out to be a prime example of fast-paced and colorful Seventies Indian action cinema at its flashiest, trashiest and, most importantly, mustache-iest. Before a single frame of this movie flickered on the screen, I knew I would absolutely adore this classic from Bollywood's black and white era. A period piece dating from the Mughal era coupled with the music and songs of Naushad were enough for me to know that this movie would be something special and indeed it was. Starring Bharat Bhushan (who often got the nod as the lead only after the script was turned down by the Big Three of Raj Kapoor, Dilip Kumar & Dev Anand) and Meena Kumari, 'Baiju Bawra' was a landmark film in the era of post-partition India. The story is a grand one and based on the true legend of Baiju, the son of a musician during the reign of King Akbar. Set in a time when emperors and their courts carried great weight across the land, Baiju challenges the king's singer Tansen (often considered the greatest musician insofar as Indian classical music is concerned) to avenge a promise he made to his dying father. Along the way he meets and then falls in love with a lovely village girl played by THE tragedy queen of her day, Meena Kumari. 'Baiju Bawra' went on to become a huge commercial as well as critical success.
