THE GREAT CLASSIC FROM 1975 -FC MEHRA AND MAJUMDAR DEVISED A UNIQUE PERIOD VENTURE-this unique portrait of bigamy is totally exceptional in indian cinema .it shows two beautiful women battling it out for the same man living under the same roof, one is the mistress [hema malini ]the other is a wife [rakhee ], the man[rajkumar ] a typical hedonistic aristocrat who likes to indulge himself with every desire that money can buy whether it is a tiger hunt or a woman's heart , he acquires them both one a poor tribal beauty, the other an educated and sophisticated musician , one as a prize trohy while on a hunt where he rescues the rustic widow hema and the other in a drunken rage in a musical concert . yet the difference is drastic as madhuri [hema]he only takes to bed without matrimony while sunita [ rakhee ] he buys like an accomodity as a wife . he obviously loves them both with a diverse emotion, but the women are in exquisite torture vying with each other to win the king . the chess game is played by hema who stalemates her newer rival- rakhee in a way no other indian movie has ever been able to match since this movie. its the talented director who gets the best ever performance off hema where she plays everything from a devil to a saint , yet in a very natural turn , he gives her a dialect and plenty of expressions to act everyone else off the screen and that's a feat when you are oppposed to rajkumar and rakhee who are superb, but here hema proves why she ruled bollywood the longest in history . she plays it all to perfection with diverse emotions written manifestly on her face ranging from anguish to envy. the costumes must have been antiques as the sets are too realistic to be props but look like a genuine palace, authentic and gorgeous to be rivalled and yet this is a very intimate drama staged as grand cinema on a huge scale with production values reflecting on the screen . it is extremely ambitious as a feminist theme which even mira nair or deepa mehta won't commit to in the small art movies of today, and hema and rakhee are genuine talented beauties ,not merely the miss l'oreals of today ,here they look divine in their six yard silk sarees and gems to rival the ancient godesses of india themselves , the songs are used sparsely in context with the script to take it further and are a medley of masterful renderings, integral to the theme ,whether its unke khayal aye to ate chale gaye by Rafi or geet gata ho main muskrata ho me by Kishore ,but asha is not to be ignored with her sooni sooni saans ki sitar par ,accompanied with a wonderful sitar play which sets the genuine musical backdrop to perfection even by the modern standards ,the background score is a learning curve as it reflects on the insight of the characters ,i must say its one of the few hindi movies where music and songs are all character driven rather to fill in the space . the tale of revenge and lust ends up with a dramatic twist -one of the best ever in cinema to end tragically ,yet it will be etched in your memory forever . its the title itself which reflects the story as written with blood on the red stones of fatehpr sikri where this enchanting movie ends , the movie is a blend of cinema which is rare like pakeeza,mother india or mughaleazam, movies with an unlimited stature and a great heritage for hindi cinema which one can be proud of forever . this is a real dark masterpiece with romance in its heart and flames glowing from its eyes like the tigress that hema symbolises,it might be a metaphor for a tiger hunt but here it becomes the vicious lie which emanates from the heart of a woman burning with a sense of loss and insecurity-the two emotions so expressively conveyed by the unassuming script and a spontaneously powerful performance by hema ,the director has tried to give her as much freedom as possible in an effort not to supress her natural talent and he extracts a truly rewarding dividend ,not just from her but the rest of the cast too in making a truly powerful period drama which is drenched in blood as the allegorical title name suggests in all it's true glory -lal pathar remember a woman scorned is a women wronged indeed and hell hath no fury like a woman scorned
