Chitrangada was the princess of Manipur (in north-east india) and wife of Arjuna. Arjuna wanted to marry her but her father refused because according to the matrilineal customs of his people, he could not allow his heirs to be taken away from Manipur by their father. Arjuna promised that he would take away neither his wife Chitr?ngad? nor any children borne by her from Manipur, and Chitrangada's father allowed them to marry. A son, whom they named Babruvahana, was soon born to them and inherited the throne of Manipur. Chitrangada is shown here in traditional Thang-ta costume, which is a form of martial arts from Manipur involving swords, spears, shields and sometimes axes. Legend has it that Chitrangada was an expert martial artist and warrior, and to this day both men and women are trained in this form of martial arts in her honor. |
